The Suspension Bridge built in 1919 was always a very popular tourist attraction in Parys (Free State South Africa). It was built to connect the mainland with one of the islands in the Vaal River. The bridge not only gives the visitor a beautiful view of the river but is in itself an excellent example of engineering. It used to be a popular picnic and swimming spot enjoyed by thousands of visitors. Many a memorable photo was taken and countless fun days in the sun were spent next to the bridge.
Unfortunately
there will always be people who will find it in their interest to ruin anything
both beautiful and historic. Over the years groups of concerned members of the
Parys Community took it upon themselves to restore an upgrade the bridge.
During
November 2000 Mr. Rudi Janssen and his two helpers, Messrs Paules Molebatsi and
John Tihobelo painted the bridge and repair the railing. The work was done over
a period of five weeks prior to the festive season. The material was donated by
local businesses, and members of the community.
After twelve
years a new group of business owners and community members, with the participation
of the Parys Museum Society, thought it was time to do it again. Lately people
started to dump their household rubbish next to the bridge, homeless people
made it their favourite spot, while others tried their hand at ways of
destruction and questionable spay-can art.
To
everybody who selflessly offer their time, effort and donations, a BIG THANK
YOU. Without you we would have lost a beautiful landmark to a disturbing number
of prime examples of neglect and non-vision.
In these days of carelessness and a
growing number of uneducated youth, it is very important to help them
understand the importance of heritage. Without it you don’t know where you came
from and you cannot learn from the examples of the past.
